Manager, Applications Engineering

25 août 2026

Position summary The Manager owns engineering capacity and the capability to do the work. This seat answers for whether the engineering function can carry the pipeline: headcount against it, the cost of running the function, hiring, and the promotion decisions that turn engineers into reviewers. It also owns the capability plan: which skills the function needs, and the training and tool investment behind them. The estimating and design method itself stays with Senior and Principal Engineer. This seat funds and staffs the standard; it does not write it. It shares ownership of the solution methodology and the technology roadmap with the Manager, Solutions Engineering: which technology classes and third-party partners the department can offer, and the analysis practice behind the concepts. The two seats hold it together, so what we can design and what we can price stay the same list. Character qualifications Innovation – We create a culture of relentless improvement of solutions and processes to make every day better. Sales Project Manager

25 août 2026

Position summary The Sales Project Manager runs the pursuit. Every proposal has a schedule, a budget, a strategy, a risk position, and a set of deliverables with names against them. The Sales Project Manager owns all of it, so that the engineers on the pursuit can spend their time engineering. The Sales Project Manager decides when work enters the department, what the pursuit costs us to produce, who owes what and by when, and whether the package is ready to go to the customer. Work is not scheduled onto this team except through a Sales Project Manager. Character qualifications Innovation – We create a culture of relentless improvement of solutions and processes to make every day better. Integrity – We are open, honest, and committed to giving the straight story every time. Service – We serve our clients, families, communities, and most importantly our people who are empowered and safe in making decisions and taking actions that dare to make us better. Ownership – We take full, personal, individual responsibility for our actions and our work. Essential duties & responsibilities Intake & qualification * Review the incoming RFP, contract, terms and conditions and statement of work for risk before the pursuit is accepted. * Decide when and whether an opportunity enters the department, and prioritize it against work in flight. Work reaches this team through an Offering Manager or it does not reach it. * Own the proposal budget: what this pursuit costs Fives to produce, by role and by hour, and escalate before an overrun rather than after it. Proposal assembly * Own the specification compliance grid and confirm the proposal answers what was asked. * Build and own the proposal schedule at milestone level, baseline it, track against the baseline, and level workload rather than absorbing peaks. * Document the bid strategy and hold the team to it as the pursuit develops. * Own the risk assessment: collect input from every contributor, document the position, and carry each mitigation into the CRD, the estimate, the proposal, the schedule and the subcontracts. * Run the quality check before release, validate the KPIs, and capture lessons learned into the next pursuit and the department standards. Contributes to * The bid/no-bid technical recommendation * The technical basis for acceptance criteria and test procedures * Mentoring, onboarding and 30/60/90 schedules * The standardization program and product classification Working with the rest of the team Partner They bring You keep Solutions Engineer The operation design and its breakdown into subsystem scope The schedule, the budget, and who works each subsystem Application Engineer Equipment, detailed layout, manifest, BOM, CRD and the estimate The deliverable dates and the hours they are worked against Controls Application Engineer Controls architecture and the electrical estimate The deliverable dates and the hours they are worked against Senior Application Engineer / Senior Controls Application Engineer The estimating standard and sign-off on the numbers The gate that says the package is ready to leave Sales / Account Management The customer relationship, commercial strategy, and the bid/no-bid decision Scope discipline, the pursuit schedule, and what it costs us to chase Operations / Project Management Execution after award, and the acceptance criteria Turnover completeness at handover Qualifications Education and experience •Bachelor’s degree, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. •8 to 12 years managing complex proposals, bids, or capital projects, including schedule and budget ownership. •Required: demonstrated ownership of a project or proposal budget, with accountability for the outcome. •Required: the standing to hold a deadline against pressure from Sales, Engineering and Operations. This role is only useful if it can say no. •Preferred, not required: material handling, capital equipment, or systems integration experience. PMP or equivalent an advantage. •Fluent with project scheduling tools and strong Excel. Technical literacy sufficient to read a layout, a manifest and an estimate, and to challenge what they say. •An engineering degree is not required for this role. Skills Language. Reads and interprets specifications, contracts, terms and conditions, and statements of work. Writes clearly enough that minutes and action items settle arguments rather than start them. Presents pursuit status to senior management and to customers. Mathematical. Works with rates, percentages, hours and cost. Reads an estimate well enough to question it. Reasoning. Defines problems, collects data, establishes facts, and draws valid conclusions. Distinguishes a schedule slip caused by a blocker from one caused by drift. Travel Travel to customer offices and job sites as the pursuit requires, typically under 20%. Progression The Sales Project Manager role has three levels: Junior Sales Project Manager (under five years, carrying a defined scope under review), Sales Project Manager, and Senior Sales Project Manager. There is no Principal level in this role. The job grows with the size and complexity of the pursuits you carry rather than with headcount, and the technical route does not run through managing people. Line management is a separate route, through Supervisor, Manager and Director of Proposal Development, open by choice rather than by seniority. 25 août 2026

Position Summary The Manager of Proposal Development owns proposal capacity and the proposal standard. This seat answers for whether the proposal function can carry the pipeline: the headcount plan against it, the cost of running the function, the hiring that closes the gap, and the promotion decisions inside it. It also owns the proposal process itself: templates, spec-compliance grids, stage gates and the effort-hour standard behind them. That is the counterpart to what Senior and Principal Engineers own on the technical side. Character Qualifications Innovation – We create a culture of relentless improvement of solutions and processes to make every day better. Solutions Engineer

25 août 2026

Position summary The Solutions Engineer designs the operation. When a customer needs receiving, storage, picking and shipping to work as one operation rather than as separate pieces of equipment, the Solutions Engineer analyzes their data, maps the process, designs the material flow across every functional area, and produces the concept everything downstream is built from. The work is industrial engineering applied to a commercial pursuit: order profiles, rates, capacity, labor, and the tradeoffs between them, worked out with the customer and defensible in front of them. The Solutions Engineer hands the Application Engineer a high-level layout with the flow and the rates behind it, and the Application Engineer makes it real. Staffing test: are we designing the operation, or equipping one that is already defined? A Solutions Engineer engages on greenfield facilities, material flow across multiple functional areas, reconfiguration or process redesign, and any pursuit with customer operational data to analyze. Replacements, expansions, defined-scope RFP responses and repeat scope run without one, and that is the normal case. Essential duties & responsibilities Intake & qualification •Give the technical feasibility read on bid/no-bid. The commercial decision sits above this department. Solution development •Analyze the customer’s data directly: order profiles, SKU velocity and slotting, volume and seasonality, labor and rate modeling. Establish the rate and capacity basis the solution is sized from. •Map the process across every functional area in scope and design the material flow that ties them into one operation: routes, buffers, decision points and interfaces. •Produce the block-level layout by functional area and select the technology class for each. •Select the third-party partners in the solution where our own product is not the answer. Commodity scope stays generic and goes to execution. •Evaluate technology feasibility and weigh the tradeoffs between options: cost, throughput, flexibility, footprint and lifecycle. Customer & supply •Work in front of the customer alongside Sales as the technical voice on the solution. •Serve as the primary technical liaison to the customer through the pursuit, presenting and defending the concept and the tradeoffs behind it. Execution & turnover •Hand execution a package they can build from: the reasoning and assumptions, not only the drawings. •Support the Project Manager through the early phases of execution. Contributes to ○Reviewing the RFP, contract and statement of work for risk ○Protecting the project budget and gross margin ○Applying Fives equipment and configurations to the requirement ○Layout drawings ○Electrical and controls architecture ○The mechanical estimate ○CRD authorship ○Technical writing, description of operation and scope ○Specification compliance and acceptance criteria ○Bid strategy ○Risk assessment ○Vendor and subcontractor evaluation ○The technical basis for acceptance criteria and test procedures ○The standardization program and product classification Working with the rest of the team Partner They bring You keep Application Engineer Equipment selection, detailed layout, manifest, BOM, CRD and the estimate The flow, the rates, the block layout, and the technology in it Electrical Estimating Engineer Controls architecture and the electrical estimate The operational flow and decision points their controls serve Principal Solutions Engineer Cross-discipline design review and final technical authority The concept on your pursuit Offering Manager Proposal schedule, bid strategy, workload prioritization, and who staffs each subsystem The technical concept and its defensibility Sales Commercial strategy, the customer relationship, the bid/no-bid decision The technical read and the operation the customer is buying Operations / Project Management Acceptance criteria, field execution, commodity equipment selection The technical basis the criteria are built on Qualifications Education and experience •Bachelor’s degree in Industrial Engineering preferred. Engineering or an equivalent combination of education and experience considered. •8 to 12 years designing automated material handling or distribution operations. •Required: ownership of facility-level or operation-level concepts spanning multiple functional areas. •Required: hands-on analysis of customer operational data, including order profiles, velocity, volumes and seasonality, and the rate and capacity modeling built on it. •Required: direct customer-facing technical experience during a sales pursuit. •Preferred, not required: material handling, distribution, parcel or baggage experience, and familiarity with AS/RS, goods-to-person, robotics and sortation technologies. Candidates from adjacent automation industries are expressly welcome. •Familiarity with discrete-event simulation, sufficient to commission and interpret it. Building the models is not required. •Excel to a high standard. SQL, Power BI or equivalent an advantage. Block-level layout in SketchUp or AutoCAD. Skills Language. Reads and interprets customer specifications, operational data, contracts and statements of work. Presents and defends concepts to customers and to senior management. Mathematical. Throughput, capacity and queuing analysis. Applied statistics on operational data. Geometry and trigonometry applied to facility layout. Reasoning. Defines problems, collects data, establishes facts, and draws valid conclusions from incomplete information, stating the assumptions used to get there. Travel Travel to customer sites, vendor plants and job sites, typically 25% to 40%. Occasional international travel for site visits or training. Progression The Solutions Engineer role has four levels: Junior Solutions Engineer, Solutions Engineer, Senior Solutions Engineer and Principal Solutions Engineer. Senior comes from consistently sound operation design and passing the discipline’s method review, and carries sign-off on others’ concepts along with coaching. Principal holds cross-discipline technical authority. None of these levels manages people. Line management is a separate route, through Supervisor, Manager and Director of Solutions, open by choice rather than by seniority. Physical demands The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Applications Engineer

25 août 2026

Position summary The Application Engineer turns the solution into a buildable, priced system. Whether the concept comes from a Solutions Engineer or from the Application Engineer reading the RFP directly, the equipment, the layout, the manifest and the number are the Application Engineer’s.
