Fives Gidding & Lewis is actively seeking a Machining Specialist to join our Grinding team in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin.
Position Summary
Performs a wide range of duties to set-up, adjust and operate precision grinding machines (ID / OD / Surface Grinders). Grinds internal and external surfaces to close and exacting tolerances which involve several interrelated dimensions. Grind parts to required finish on work having steps or surfaces, high precision diameters, recesses and tapers. This requires skill, judgment and knowledge related to precision grinding techniques and finishes. Familiarity with GD&T and the ability to read Blueprints.
Key Responsibilities
The successful candidate will:
- Work from drawings, specifications, setup instructions, and other data to load, position, align and secure workpiece in machine.
- Starts and observes machine operation to detect malfunctions or out-of-tolerance machining and adjusts machine controls as needed.
- Study and work from part drawings and specifications, to determine dimensions and tolerances of finished workpiece. Work to very close tolerances.
- Use a range of measuring instruments such as OD & ID micrometers, depth micrometers, calipers, dial indicators, air gauges, bore gauges, Tesa & Mueller gauges, special fixed and adjustable measuring devices to make set-ups, adjustments and to check work
- Detects unusual conditions, defective materials or operating difficulties and report to proper supervision. Maintains machine and work area in a clean and orderly manner.
Qualifications
To be successful in this role, candidates should possess:
- Knowledge of grinding methods, wheels, cutting qualities of metals.
- Knowledge of Geometric dimensioning and tolerancing.
- The ability to maintain quality standards while efficiently performing complex work.
- Ability to use shop math together with the use of complicated drawings, specifications, charts, tables, etc.
- Knowledge of various types of precision measuring instruments such as inside and outside micrometers, vernier caliper, Snap gauge, micrometer depth gauge and dial indicator.
- Able to use independent judgment to plan, perform and make decisions as to sequence of set-ups, operations and processes within a sequence of standard and recognized procedures.
- Able to operate machines of various styles and sizes of parts requiring grinding of various operations.
- Able to work with Metric or English drawings.
